Greenwood Ecology & Countryside Management was formed in 2015 to provide a diverse range of ecological and land management services across public, private and charitable sectors. We work closely with a range of associates and colleagues within other disciplines to provide a holistic and integrated approach to our work. This approach allows us to be effective at all scales from individuals wanting to convert a barn, to larger scale developments requiring a bespoke approach and a specialist team. Above all, we thrive on finding pragmatic solutions that not only work for you, but also benefit the natural world that we are a part of.
Pete Etheridge BSc, MCIEEM, MCMA
Owner & Principal Ecologist
"I launched Greenwood Ecology in 2015 following a move from Bristol, where I worked as a Principal Ecologist for a leading environmental consultancy. Having gained a wide range of experiences within the conservation and environmental sectors, I wanted to offer my own bespoke service to clients.
With numerous protected species licences, I now specialise in the collection of ecological survey data as well as preparation of ecological assessments and reports for a range of clients. My main specialisms lie in the ecology of birds, bats and other protected mammal species. As well as ecological surveys & assessments I am also experienced in providing conservation management advice and practical works, particularly in relation to sustainable woodland management."
"I am a passionate advocate for sustainable land use and, in particular, the use of working horses for low impact and sensitive work on environmentally sensitive sites. Using my team of Comtois and Suffolk Punch horses, I am able to undertake land management operations on sites that are not normally accessible by heavy machinery. Whether that is bracken rolling, timber felling & extraction, hay meadow management or cultivation for small-scale food production, I can provide a carbon neutral services to landowners, conservation organisations and local authorities."
“Greenwood Ecology & Conservation consistently provides an excellent service for my clients. Pete is very approachable, thorough and efficient. I have every confidence in the ecological advice and reports provided by Greenwood Ecology & Countryside Management.”
Debbie Crowther MA (Oxon) MSc MRTPI
“I have worked with Pete for many years and I have relied on his skill and pragmatism many times during that period. If I know that Pete will be undertaking a site visit or completing reporting on our behalf, I know that I can trust him to get the job done and feel confident that it will be to the high standard that I would expect from any of our senior in-house staff. He is thorough, diligent and reliable. Working with Pete is a breath of fresh air! I would have no hesitation in recommending his services.”
Caroline Chipperfield, Principal Ecologist

Jen Weaver, Ecological Project Manager
“An excellent job done (otter survey) at short notice, very professional and thorough. As a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, I would highly recommend the services of Pete Etheridge.”
Charles Dutton, Senior Forest Manager
“Pete Etheridge is a trusted ecologist who did the environmental assessment for our successful planning application. Pete also had fantastic advice on how to do our barn conversion without disruption to local wildlife and helped us see what we could do to incorporate owls, bats, swallows and swifts into the design of our house and garden. A real pleasure to work with and a delight to learn from his treasure trove of knowledge! Thanks Pete.”
